Lets solve this with elimination.
Add both equations together, you will notice the y terms cancel each other out because "y-y = 0". This is what we want.

The result is:
[tex]3x = -12[/tex]
Divide both sides by 3
[tex]x = -4[/tex]

To find y-value, plug in x=-4 into 1st equation:
[tex]2(-4) +y = -8[/tex]
-8 +y = -8
y = 0

Solution is  (-4,0)
